Rawlings exposes NDC for charging 4.2 billion filing fees

Image
Founder of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jerry John Rawlings, has subtly agreed with Stephen Atubiga, one of the 13 presidential aspirants of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that anyone, who is able to pay the staggering GH¢420,000 nomination and filing fees is a thief. Mr. Rawlings said the fees being charged by the party would send wrong signals about the philosophical foundation of the party. The former president expressed the concern when the newly-elected National Executive Committee of the party called on him at his office at Ridge in Accra on Friday. The party’s founder advised the National Executive Committee to review their decision and find alternatives to address the legitimate concern of raising funds to finance the presidential elections. He also called for the restoration of the missing integrity in the party. Last Thursday the NDC set GH¢400,000 as filing fees and GH¢20,000 for nomination forms for its upcoming presidenti...

Spio-Garbrah fumes: General Mosquito and Ofosu Ampofo must resign

Image
An aspiring flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, has called for the resignation of two top officers of the party. According to him, the chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, and the general secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, need to step aside. This, he explained, is because they have compromised their positions and can therefore not be trusted. “Obviously, these are people who have already declared support for a candidate, so on the basis of principles, it is fair that they step aside for a fair process,” he said. He went ahead to say that the executives are committing an illegality by deciding on a filing fee without consulting the council of elders. One of the aspirants, Professor Joshua Alabi, has indicated the he may raise the GHC400,000 demanded by the party. He revealed that he has been receiving calls from the grassroots in that respect, so he is ready to secure the funds to settle the filing fees. He noneth...

Supreme Court Nails Woyome

Image
The Supreme Court has dismissed an attempt by businessman, Mr Alfred Agbesi Woyome, to have the ongoing legal proceedings in relation to his GH¢47.2 million debt owed the state moved to the High Court. In a ruling yesterday, the apex court, presided over by a sole justice, Mr Justice Anthony A. Benin, held that it had the power to enforce its judgement and, therefore, surrendering its jurisdiction to the High Court would be unconstitutional. The current legal battle is that the defunct UT Bank, through its receivers, is claiming ownership of two residential properties that the Attorney-General (A-G) says belong to Mr Woyome and, therefore, wants to sell to offset the debt. Objection Lead counsel for Mr Woyome, Mr Osafo Buabeng, had raised an objection challenging the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to hear and determine the dispute, since it was under the High Court (Civil Procedure Rules, 2004, CI 47). It was counsel’s argument that hearing the case in ...
